Starting off with the irie stabs of a solitary Fender guitar, ‘Carolina’ quickly kicks into gear with a driving beat and bass-line complemented by a catchy organ/ guitar hook and Knight’s ‘lennon-esque’ vocal.
Following the succeeding verses (lyrically referencing a struggle with love and addiction) the number really opens up into a huge pre-chorus, full of the lush harmonies and instrumentation that only a band of this size can truly produce live, before resolving to a bona fide Classic-Pop chorus.
As the song progresses Ludowyk introduces more of his trademark analogue sound and tape saturation as the band’s massive horn section and lead guitar come to the fore. The journey comes to an end as the climactic Plastic-Soul outro drops from the ‘all-in’ big-band arrangement to reflective piano chords fading off into a distant echo.
